Hi, Welcome!

Greetings and welcome to the Virtual Vitality Nutrition blog. I’m thrilled you’re here. Whether you’re starting your journey to better health or looking for expert guidance on weight loss, metabolic health, gut health or overall well-being, I hope this blog will help you on your journey. My aim is to provide practical advice, science-backed tips and motivation to help you achieve your health goals. But before we dive into all that, let me introduce myself.

Who I Am

My name is Dr Jess McMaster, a Metabolic Health Dietitian with over 9 years of experience. Over the years, I’ve specialised in metabolic health and weight management (and how they intersect with gut health), particularly focusing on women between the ages of 30 and 60. I’ve worked with countless clients who have struggled with weight loss, metabolic conditions and the confusion that often comes with trying to navigate the onslaught of health information that is available EVERYWHERE.

But let’s go beyond the professional side for a moment. Here’s a little about me personally—I believe that food should be enjoyed, not feared and that healthy eating doesn’t mean giving up the things you love. I’m all about balance and finding what works for you, not just following the latest diet trend.

On a personal note, I’m a proud mum to an energetic two-year-old, which brings both joy and the constant challenge of balancing a busy family life with a commitment to health. Navigating the demands of parenthood has given me invaluable insights into the everyday realities that many of my clients face. I understand firsthand how it can be difficult to prioritise healthy eating when life gets hectic and the days seem to fly by.

As a busy mum, I’ve learned that quick and convenient doesn’t have to mean sacrificing nutrition. My own experiences have shaped my approach to creating practical, realistic strategies for maintaining a healthy lifestyle amidst the chaos of family life. From having a well-stocked freezer and hacks around what to buy as healthy takeaway, I’ve developed systems that make it easier to put healthy meals on the table, even on the busiest days.

I also know how overwhelming it can be to juggle multiple responsibilities and still find time to focus on personal health goals. This empathy drives me to offer solutions that are not only evidence-based but also practical and achievable. I’m committed to helping you find that balance—making sure that your health journey fits seamlessly into your daily routine, rather than feeling like another item on a never-ending to-do list.

My Qualifications

I’m an Accredited Practising Dietitian with a deep passion for nutrition and a dedication to helping others achieve optimal health. My journey in the field began with a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Dietetics Studies from the University of Queensland, where I developed a strong foundation in nutritional science, dietetics and practical clinical care. Over the years, I’ve specialised in metabolic health, weight management and how these intersect with gut health, which is a growing area of interest and research.

With more than nine years of experience, I’ve had the privilege of working with a wide variety of clients, particularly women in their 30s to 60s who are navigating weight loss challenges, metabolic conditions or simply seeking to improve their overall well-being. My approach is always tailored, combining the latest in scientific research with practical, realistic advice that can be seamlessly integrated into your life. I truly believe that healthy eating doesn’t have to be overwhelming or restrictive—it’s about finding what works for you and your lifestyle.

In 2019, I completed a PhD at the University of Queensland, where my research focused on metabolic health and weight loss. I was honoured to receive the Dean’s Award for Outstanding Higher Degree by Research Theses, which is granted to individuals whose research demonstrates exceptional contributions to their field. This accolade reflects my commitment to pushing boundaries in the field of nutrition and ensuring that my work stands out for its quality, rigour and real-world application.

What I love most about my work is helping people not only achieve their health goals but also rebuild their relationship with food. I’ve found that many of my clients come to me after years of struggling with unconscious eating habits, dieting fads and misinformation. My mission is to provide evidence-based, compassionate care that empowers you to take back control of your health in a sustainable way.

My Mission

I know how frustrating it can be to feel like you’ve tried everything—counting calories, following strict meal plans, doing intense workouts—only to see minimal results. My mission is to help you break free from that cycle. I believe in sustainable, long-term strategies for improving metabolic health and reaching your weight loss goals, all while nurturing a positive relationship with food.

Whether you’re struggling with slow weight loss, insulin resistance or just want to optimise your health as you age, my approach is personalised and compassionate. We’ll look at everything—from your nutrition and physical activity to your stress levels and gut health—to create a plan that supports your entire well-being.

How I Can Help

In this blog, you’ll find:

  • Evidence-Based Advice: You deserve information that’s rooted in science. No gimmicks, no fads—just tried-and-tested methods to improve your metabolic health and shed excess weight.

  • Practical Tips: From meal planning to exercise strategies, I’ll break down complicated topics into actionable steps you can take right away. For it to be practical, it has to be easy to understand and not overwhelmingly complex and that is what I aim to deliver.

  • Education: My first love before moving into the clinical space was research, it was a natural landing place for me because I was that kid who was always asking “why” about everything (my dad and I were always doing nerdy science activities on the weekend). But as I moved more into clinical dietetics, I realised that I’m passionate about helping you understand the "why" behind your health challenges, so you feel empowered to make informed decisions and that this was something other dietitians didn’t share the same passion for.

Each week, I’ll be sharing a new post focused on specific aspects of metabolic health, weight loss and overall wellness. Whether you’re interested in learning how to boost your metabolism, improve your gut health or manage stress, there’s something here for everyone!

And while I work with people from all walks of life, I specialise in helping women who are in their 40s, 50s and beyond. I understand the unique challenges that come with this phase of life—like how hormones, metabolism and lifestyle factors can make weight loss feel like an uphill battle.
